Description of roles to improve patient care or provide pharmacy services during the COVID-19 pandemic

Our Pharmacy Technician team members are taking extra duties during this pandemic time. For example, they have to perform extra cleaning and sanitizing duties to make sure that the medications are safe for health care staff members to handle and for patients to take. They have to handle medication for more areas because the hospital has been opening more care areas for Covid patients. They have adjusted their shifts so all units received their AUD strips in time and to be sure Technicians who work in the Oncology  Clinic can stay in Oncology.  Because of this they have also been working short staffed in the dispensary.

The pharmacy technicians ensured that all patients and all wards had timely access to medications throughout the pandemic. They serviced COVID-19 units since the beginning of the pandemic, during a time of much uncertainty. When delivering medications to different wards, they had to adapt to the procedures outlined by each unit. They dealt with changes to policies and procedures that affected their daily workflow. They had to service wards that did not exist previous to COVID-19, leading to an increased workload. They also had to adapt to changing PPE and cleaning protocols.
