Brief description of role or responsibilities
The pharmacists at Buckley Valley Hospital in Smithers, BC work in the dispensary, on the ward, and in long term care. The pharmacists are responsible for working in an interdisciplinary team, create orders and care plans, assist with admissions and discharges, and verify all the orders.
The technicians run the dispensary and assist BC Cancer in preparing chemo. The pharmacy technicians enter the orders, create the product, check the product, and deliver the product to the unit.
Describe how the individual or team made a positive contribution to patient care or their pharmacy department:
The pharmacy and the hospital would not run without this amazing team of pharmacists and technicians. Being such a small site, they really get to know one another. They truly work as a team supporting each other especially when there are tougher days.
Since Smithers is such a small community the physicians, nurses, and lab have come to rely on this team for ongoing support. The work of the pharmacists and technicians does not go unnoticed and the interdisciplinary teams trust their skills and knowledge. They truly care about the patients they are providing care for and how medications impact the lives of the patients.
