Brief description of role or responsibilities
Aron is an academic detailing pharmacist with the BC Provincial Academic Detailing (PAD) service providing accredited continuing education sessions to health care workers, as well as direct patient care as a clinical pharmacist at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace.
Describe how the individual or team made a positive contribution to patient care or their pharmacy department:
I had the pleasure of having Aron as my practice educator on my PAD rotation. Aron is involved in translating medical evidence to practical use, with skills that encompass critical appraisal, identifying knowledge gaps of prescribers, and discussing how evidence may assist better decision making on a daily basis.
This is the first time that Northern Health has offered a PAD rotation for its pharmacy residents and it exceeded my expectations. The academic detailing model focuses on individual or small group discussions tailored to participant needs and is known to be one of the most impactful forms of education. Aron showcased the tailoring part effortlessly as he transitioned between different teaching methods with various audience groups. He highlighted the importance knowing your audience as his sessions were well received and the participants left satisfied, eager to participate on the next sessions.
Aron also gave me invaluable tips on how to conduct research in a practical way so PICO doesn’t sound so daunting anymore. I also thoroughly enjoyed the process of assisting him with editing of the PAD Refills and found the exercises to be well worth the time.
I’m grateful to be calling Aron my mentor as I look forward to seeing him continue to utilize his unique skillset to support pharmacist, physicians, nurses, and students to better understand how medications can benefit patients.
