Brief description of role or responsibilities
Dr. Sharaf is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist practicing at UBCH. Day to day, he is responsible for the care of patients from psychiatry, BC Neuropsychiatry and the Short-term Assessment & treatment Centre (a specialized unit for older adults experiencing health changes). As part of his role, he is working with the UBCH long-term care (LTC) pharmacists to improve the quality of care for LTC residents.
Describe how the individual or team made a positive contribution to patient care or their pharmacy department:
Dr. Mazen Sharaf has only joined our UBCH team since late Dec 2023. In the short time, he has established himself as a medication expert and a valuable team member for the UBCH inpatient psychiatry units. I recalled one staff referring to his medication expertise at rounds as “mind-blowing”. With his friendly and humble interactions, he is a great ambassador for pharmacy.
In the last six months, Mazen took on additional responsibilities to provide his expertise for long-term care (LTC) pharmacists. Aligned with the organizational priority to reduce antipsychotic use in LTC, Mazen has been working tirelessly on tools and resources for pharmacists. He has also been leading monthly discussions and educations with UBCH LTC pharmacists around this topic.
Kudos to his efforts on this very important issue, and his commitment to improve care!
